Assam: Protest against closure of Assamese-medium schools

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia District Students’ Union burnt the effigy of Assam Chief Minister and the State Education Minister in protest against the closure of 221 Assamese-medium schools in the Tinsukia district, at Thana Chariali, Tinsukia on Wednesday after holding a protest march from AASU office to Thana Chariali

Samarjyoti Gohain, the general secretary of Tinsukia District Students’ Union, stated in a press release that at a time when the Assam Government should have improved the infrastructure of schools, recruit teachers planning for a better quality education system to motivate parents to enrol their children in Assamese medium schools, closure of Assamese medium would be unacceptable to the student body. They demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision by the Education Minister or else the minister should resign.
