GUWAHATI: Assam has seen massive tourist footfall in the past season and now with the setting of the world record with the Bihu dance festival, the state is looking ahead to increase the number of tourists in the coming year.

The Managing Director of Assam Tourism Development Corporation Kumar Padmapani Bora mentioned that the state of Assam had welcomed around 10 million domestic tourists in the previous year of the tourism calendar. This number is close to a nearly 575 % increase in footfall. It is more than double the highest number during the pre-COVID period.

The pandemic had put a massive dent in the tourism sector of the state just like any other part of the world but this region managed to spring back quite sharply. The northeastern part of the country has seen massive growth during this time after the gradual removal of the restrictions across the country. This also encouraged the visit of international tourists to the region.

The Union Minister of Tourism mentioned that the Northeastern part of the country had handled a record-breaking number of over 11.8 million domestic visitors as well as over 100000 international tourists. Assam accounted for more than 90% of this number owing to its large number of natural as well as cultural tourism resources.

The efforts of the state government under Himanta Biswa Sarma to highlight the culture of the state, be it in the form of Lachit Borphukan’s 400th birth anniversary celebration or the massive Bihu celebration which set a world record, has come a long way in making the state a popular tourist destination.

Kumar Padmapani Bora also mentioned the efforts of the Chief Minister and the support from the North East Council towards the development of various key destinations of the state. PM-DevINE, Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD are some of the schemes that have encouraged the tourism sector of the state.
