Assam Registers 583 Fresh Coronavirus Cases, Active Cases Breach 2000-Mark

Assam, as of Monday, reported 583 fresh cases of coronavirus pushing the total tally of active cases to 2,387.

GUWAHATI: Just ahead of the much-awaited Rongali BihuAssam on April 12 reported an alarming spike of 583 fresh new COVID 19 cases, which takes the total tally of caseload to 2,387. 

The highest contributors of COVID 19 cases from across Assam are reported from Kamrup Metro with 193 cases, followed by Kamrup Rural at 48, Dibrugarh at 43, and Nagaon at 29. These cases were reported after the state had conducted over one lakh COVID 19 tests as of Monday. There were no deaths reported on Monday and the total cases of fatalities add up to 1,118. Meanwhile, 98 patients were discharged on Monday. With a recovery rate of 97.80 percent, the number of recovered patients to date adds up to 2,16,041. 

This rapid rise of COVID 19 cases comes as Assam gears up to celebrate the festival of Bohag Bihu. As thousands of people all across Assam gather to celebrate Bihu at places where cultural functions are held, the Government of Assam had issued certain guidelines which have to be strictly adhered to by the people and the officials. Last year though Bihu celebrations were canceled due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Meanwhile, India has reported 1,61,736 new COVID 19 cases as of Tuesday, pushing India's tally of active caseload to 1,36,89,453 according to the data released by the Union Ministry of Health. The total cases of death reported in the last 24 hours stand to be 879, taking the total death toll to 1,71,058. The total number of active cases has been in an upwards spiral for the 34th consecutive day tallying up to 12,64,698. The data stated that the total number of recovered patients adds up to 1,22,53,697 while the fatality rate dropped further to 1.25 percent. The active caseload was at its lowest on February 12, 2021, at 1,35,926, and was at its highest on September 18, 2020, at 10,17,754. Union Health Ministry claims that as many as 10.85 crore people have been administered at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine so far.

It is also important to note that after 12 days into the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar amidst the steep surge of coronavirus cases, the Uttrakhand government is struggling to implement the COVID 19 safety protocols such as effective thermal screening, wearing of masks, and proper social distancing. According to medical department officials, over 18,169 devotees were tested between 11.30 pm on Sunday to 5 pm on Monday out of which 102 were found positive.
