GOHPUR: Continuous and unyielding rainfall over the past several days has unleashed a wave of severe flooding in the Gohpur area of Assam. The tumultuous waters of the Sesa River, swollen to its brim, have deluged numerous villages within the Kalabari Village Panchayat block. Among the affected villages grappling with the deluge are Bishnupur, Nabapur, and Kamalouguri. The flooding has also taken its toll on education, as the Kamalouguri Primary School finds itself submerged, halting the academic pursuits of local children.
As per most recent reports, the unceasing downpour since last night has escalated the flooding crisis in this region. The Sesa River, surging over the compromised embankment along its course, has compounded the inundation of the area. It's worth noting that the Kalabari village panchayat block also happens to be the home panchayat of Gohpur MLA Utpal Bora. However, despite this proximity to political representation, the villagers in the Kalabari panchayat block continue to grapple with the annual cycle of floods without respite.
Local residents have made an impassioned plea to the government and their elected representative to address the recurring flood situation in the area. One local resident stated, "The incessant rains in recent days have caused extensive flooding in our locality, adversely affecting Kamalouguri Primary School and the entire Kamalouguri area. Through the media, we want to appeal to the government and our local MLA to consider urgent embankment repairs, which would enable the school to function properly at the very least."
The persistent heavy rainfall in recent days has resulted in flooding in several parts of Assam. Just yesterday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya, with a 48-hour duration. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati issued an orange alert for select districts in Assam, forecasting light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall events. Consequently, the rainy spell is anticipated to persist for at least another day.
