Assam Remembers Kanaklata Barua, Other Freedom Fighters Martyred on This Day

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday paid rich tributes to Assam freedom fighters including Kanaklata Barua, Tileswari Barua and others. who died on this day in 1942 Quit India movement.

Assam witnessed tears and blood on September 20, 1942 as many brave-hearts laid down their lives for the country during the Quit India Movement.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to recall the sacrifice made by great leaders for the freedom of the country.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote "Hundreds of millions bow down to those saints who have sacrificed their lives for freedom."

Remembering the sacrifices and valour of heroes in Quit India Movement, Assam Police in their official twitter handle also posted "Remembering all the brave heroes of Assam, who laid down their lives and made the supreme sacrifice during the Quit India Movement, 1942."

Lost in the pages of Assamese history, Kanaklata Barua is remembered as the youngest freedom fighter from Assam.

In another tweet, officials paid tribute to the "youngest fighter" who fought dauntlessly for her country.

"We are paying homage to the youngest freedom fighter Kankalata Baruak who sacrificed his life for the sake of his country."

It is to be mentioned that several Assamese women, who were members of the Mrityu-Bahini or Santi-Sena were the backbone of the movement.

They are prominent leaders from Assam who made significant contribution to the movement and were also arrested within days of adopting the movement.

The Quit India Movement in Assam took place at Kamrup, Nagaon, Darrang, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Barpeta.
