Guwahati: At a time when the entire nation is up in arms over brytal incidents of rape, it has come to light that Assam too is emerging as a major hub of violent crime. According to the latest National Crimes Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the state has recorded a total of 1,23,512 violent crimes in 2019 alone.
According to 'Crimes in India 2019', a three-volume report released by the NCRB, the number of cognizable crime cases is Assam has been rising in a steady and alarming manner. Assam had recorded 1,04,324 cognizable crime cases in 2017 and 1,12,233 cases in 2018.
Notably, Assam far outstrips the other Northeast Indian states when it comes to the number of violent crimes. The number of crimes in the other Northeastern states Arunachal Pradesh (2,590), Manipur (2,830), Meghalaya (3,125), Mizoram (2,139), Nagaland (1,117), and Tripura (5,336) pales in comparison that of Assam/
Nationwide, 51,56,172 cognizable crimes comprising 32,25,701 Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes and 19,30,471 Special and Local Laws (SLL) crimes were registered in 2019. The data shows an increase of 1.6 percent in the registration of cases over 2018 (50,74,635 cases).
Crimes against women are on the rise across the country and Uttar Pradesh leads the other states when it comes to violent crimes against the fairer sex. While 4,05,861 cases of crimes against women were registered during 2019, 3,78,236 cases were reported in 2018. Thus, the number of crimes again women has risen by a whopping 7.3 percent over 2018.
The majority of such under IPC were registered under 'Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives' (30.9 percent) followed by 'Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty' (21.8 percent), 'Kidnapping and Abduction of Women' (17.9 percent) and 'Rape' (7.9 percent).
While 58.8 women (in one lakh) were victims of crime in 2018, the number rose to a worrying 62.4 in 2019.
The data also shows that the number of crimes against senior citizens (persons aged above 60) is also on the rise. In 2019, a total of 27,696 cases were registered for committing crimes against senior citizens. This is a steep rise in the number of such crimes compared to 2018 when 24,349 such cases were reported.
Meanwhile, the number of kidnappings and murder have marginally decreased in 2018. 28,918 cases of murder were registered during 2019, showing a marginal decrease of 0.3 percent over 2018, when 29,017 cases were reported.
Again, 1,05,037 cases of kidnapping and abduction were registered during 2019, showing a marginal decrease of 0.7 percent over 2018 (1,05,734 cases).
Meanwhile, a total of 1,48,185 cases of crimes against children were registered during 2019, showing an increase of 4.5 percent over 2018, when 1,41,764 such cases were reported in India.
