NAGAON: Based on secret inputs, Nagaon police led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rupjyoti Kalita conducted a raid at Santijan bazar area near Batadrova Than, during which police recovered a rhino horn from the house of one Saidul Islam on Friday. Police immediately arrested Saidul Islam.
Meanwhile, based on his statement, Nagaon police also conducted raid at night on the same day in the house of another rhino poacher, Hatem Ali who was able to escape from police. During raid, police seized Rs 50,000 in cash and some other objectionable items from Hatem Ali’s house. Subsequently, police took Saidul Islam to a riverine areas near the mighty Brahmaputra for further investigation at the same night. But the arrested Saidul Islam tried to escape from police and jumped into the mighty Brahmaputra, sources said, adding that the body of Saidul Islam was recovered from the mighty Brahmaputra the following day by SDRF teams.
While addressing a press conference here at Nagaon, SP Leena Doley claimed that the rhino horn was confirmed as an original rhino horn in the preliminary test by the forest experts and was poached within 30 to 45 days. SP Doley, however, said that it might belong to the rhino that was poached at Bagori range in Kaziranga National Park a month ago.
