BISWANATH CHARIALI: The 15th annual Ripunjoy Tamuly Memorial Lecture was delivered at Ripunjoy Knowledge Hub, Biswanath College on Saturday. Speaking on the topic ‘Artificial Intelligence and Future of Mankind’, Chitta Ranjan Oza, Superintendent of Police (Communication), in addition to offering an in-depth comparison and contrast between human intelligence and artificial intelligence, dwelt at length on the revolutionary changes brought about by application of artificial intelligence in the fields of education, healthcare, economy, politics and war strategies. While highlighting the immense possibilities explored by artificial intelligence, Oza also pointed out the threats posed by artificial intelligence not only to human life and living but also to civilization itself.

“Artificial intelligence entails no risk till it remains under human control, he said. However, looking at the exponential growth of machine-based intelligence, scientists have averred that artificial intelligence would attain the point of singularity within a few decades which would render it beyond human control. If it so happens, artificial intelligence will soon surpass human intelligence and it may sound the death knell for human civilization because artificial intelligence is devoid of human sensibilities, it is emotionless and bereft of ethical obligations,” Oza said.

At the outset of the lecture programme, Dr Chinta Mani Sharma, principal, Biswanath College delivered his welcome address while the guests were felicitated by Dr Karabi Gogoi and Dr Dipankar Saikia.
