BISWANATH: With the recent rains across the entire northeast region, the water levels have increased rapidly in the Brahmaputra River. The Biswanath region has seen massive soil erosion and the same has brought the embankment in the Panpur region at severe risk of being breached.

The damages to the Panpur embankment by soil erosion have put the regions of Biswanath, Sootea and Jamugurihaat at risk of flooding. Showing their fear and anger regarding this problem, the local people blame the contractors as well as the officials of the concerned departments.

It is noteworthy that the region has been affected by soil erosion for several years now, but no concrete action has been taken to prevent the same. A large part of the land on the bank has already been affected by erosion. Locals alleged that even after the allocation of large sums of money towards the prevention of erosion, they have not seen any positive change. They also added that complaints had been raised several times regarding the quality of work, but no action was taken regarding the same which points out the possibility of corruption in the projects.

Meanwhile, the officials and workers of the water resources department are trying hard to make the necessary repairs to the embankment, but that seems almost impossible in front of the massive river. The minister of the water resources department also visited the location and took stock of the soil erosion in the region. He assured me that all activities will be taken for the protection of the people.

Also, the flood situation has worsened in the state with the inundation of fresh areas, affecting more people, their households and crops. Erosion also accompanied the floods in several places. Six districts of the state - Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Kamrup (M), Dibrugarh, Cachar, and Nalbari - are under the grip of floods. It is urban flooding that has affected people in Kamrup (M), Cachar and Nalbari districts.
