GUWAHATI: The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), made a significant announcement on Monday regarding the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations scheduled for 2024. These crucial exams are set to commence on February 16 and will run through March 4, providing students with a window of nearly three weeks to demonstrate their academic prowess.

The practical examination phase is slated to commence on February 2, while the theory examination will begin on February 16. However, the real twist lies in SEBA's decision to incorporate Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets for answering objective-type questions. This strategic shift in the examination pattern aims to enhance the assessment process and align it with modern evaluation methods.

In a directive issued by SEBA to the Inspector of Schools (AII), the board has detailed the new format. According to this directive, a substantial 50 percent of the total marks will be allocated to objective-type questions. These questions, each carrying one mark, will be featured in core subjects, including English (CI), General Mathematics (C2), General Science (C3), and Social Science (C4). Notably, for this section of the examination, each candidate will be provided with a dedicated OMR sheet in their name.

The remaining 50 percent of the questions will adhere to the traditional examination style, with separate answer scripts containing 16 pages being provided, just as before. This balanced approach ensures that students' comprehensive knowledge and problem-solving skills are evaluated alongside their ability to respond to objective questions.

This strategic shift by SEBA represents a progressive step in adapting the assessment system to meet the demands of modern education. The inclusion of OMR sheets for objective questions not only streamlines the grading process but also encourages students to develop concise and precise responses, a valuable skill in today's competitive academic landscape.

As the examination dates draw nearer, students, teachers, and parents will undoubtedly be preparing for this new format. SEBA's commitment to providing a fair and effective evaluation process is evident in these changes, and it will be fascinating to observe the impact of this shift on the academic outcomes of the HSLC 2024 candidates. In the coming months, students across Assam will be diligently preparing for these exams, which are instrumental in shaping their educational future.
