GUWAHATI: On Tuesday, an untoward incident took place in the Bokakhat sub-divisional police officer’s quarter hall premises in the Golaghat district. A security guard reportedly started shooting early on Tuesday at the quarters of sub-divisional police officer Renukantala Sheetal Kumar.

Security guard Chotelal Sharma has been named as the offender. He was armed with an AK-47 rifle and opened fire after a struggle with Kumar.

The accused and four security guards who were there when the incident occurred were detained by the police without delay.

The other security personnel has been named Konkan Das, Madhurjya Borthakur, Chotelal Sharma, and Konkan Pator. The security guards were accused of engaging in illegal activity and are currently being held by authorities on suspicion of compromising public safety.

On the other side, the Assam government made the key decision a few days ago to grant voluntary retirement to some 300 Assam Police officers. The choice was made to forbid routine drinking, which has a negative impact on the body.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma during a program informed the press that the Assam Govt has decided to offer VRS and as a result, new recruitment will be done to fill up the vacancies.

Around 300 officers and jawans are habitual drinkers, and Sarma, who is also in charge of the home ministry, revealed to reporters during a program that their bodies have been severely harmed by their excessive alcohol consumption. They now have access to a voluntary retirement plan (VRS), which the government has developed in accordance with an outdated law that has not previously been put into practice.

The chief minister also stated that he is striving to decentralize government and has already begun the process of setting up offices with the authority formerly held by the deputy commissioners' office in each of the 126 legislative assembly constituency districts.
