Assam: Seminar on intellectual property rights held in Barpeta

BARPETA:  A seminar on ‘Intellectual Property Rights’ under the aegis of the Research, Innovation and Extension Cell of Barpeta Girls’ College, was held at the college conference hall on Thursday.

Dr Banjit Tahbildar, Assistant Professor, Assamese Department hosted the seminar and it started with Dr Anamika Medhi, convener of the Cell and Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, highlighting the significance of the discussion on the topic. Principal of the college, Dr Birinchi Kumar Das attended the seminar as a resource person and spoke on the concept of intellectual property rights, elaborating its necessity and importance. He mainly discussed various types of intellectual property rights, such as copyright, patent, trademark, geographical indications etc., while mentioning various laws associated with them.

Another resource person, Dr Hemanta Deka, Associate Professor in the Department of Assamese, Barpeta Road Howly College, mainly dealt with copyright and plagiarism. He said that while creativity is an important human quality, humans are also fond of imitating, and there comes the point of plagiarism. He also spoke on the measures taken by the University Grants Commission to curb plagiarism in research.
