JAMUGURIHAT: Herds of wild elephants that come out from the Nameri National Park in search of food, enter into the adjoining villages of Nameri, on the northern part of Jamugurihat, causing great damage to the paddy fields of the farmers.

Such an incident took place on Wednesday night in Miri Gaon that shares a boundary with NNP (Nameri National Park) when a herd of wild elephants entered the village and a calf got separated from the herd. The frightened elephant calf moved around the village, causing sensation among the villagers in broad daylight. The villagers immediately informed the forest department about the incident. Later on, a team of forest guards from Diplonga range reached the area and tried to send back the separated calf to the NNP.

Every year, herds of wild elephants that come out from the NNP and the forests of Arunachal Pradesh cause destruction. Many people have lost their lives in the man-elephant conflict. The government has found no permanent solution to this issue. The local residents residing on the northern belt of Jamugurihat have appealed to the State Government and the department concerned to take necessary measures in this regard.
