GUWAHATI: The Assam government is set to grant university status to seven state colleges. The state will have 10 universities as a result.

These seven colleges are: Sibsagar College, Gurucharan College, J.B . College, Kokrajhar College, North Lakimpur College, Nowgong College, Bongaigaon College.

Taking on Twitter, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that “In our endeavour to make Assam as an educational hub of Eastern India, we are planning to upgrade 7 colleges to university status.

Once this happens , we would have established 10 new universities in the State since 2021. Yesterday, I met with the principals of these colleges.”

However, the possibility of Handique Girls' College achieving university status appears like a far-off dream as the Assam government considers bringing new measures to transform colleges in the state into universities.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, clarified on June 16 that the government of Assam will introduce bills to establish new universities in Sibsagar College, Kokrajhar Government College, Bongaigaon College, JB College-Jorhat, North Lakhimpur College, Nagaon College, and Gurucharan College in the August assembly session amid confusion regarding proposed universities to make provisions for the accommodation of the concept of "Constituent College."

However, because Handique College doesn't currently have enough land, upgrading the institution will take time.

According to sources, Handique Girls' College now serves 2,700 students, and the institution would need more property in order to expand into a university.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, in all State Universities and Colleges on June 3, 2023. One of the first states in the nation to implement NEP 2020 is Assam. All higher education institutions in the state will now offer a 4-year undergraduate programme.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to transform the Indian educational system, forms the basis for the courses.

Earlier, the Assam CM added that a liberal education policy had been established for the first time, eliminating the strict divisions between the three disciplines (science, arts, and commerce).

It should be emphasized that NEP 2020, which was introduced in July 2020, offers a set of guiding principles for a paradigm shift throughout the Indian educational system, from primary to postgraduate levels.
