Assam: Several Cases of Japanese Encephalitis Reported

BISWANATH: The number of Japanese Encephalitis infections has increased at a very alarming rate in the state of Assam. More than 5 cases have been reported from the Biswanath region of the state in the past few days, including one death.

The victim was unwell for a very long time and had been shifted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital, where he breathed his last. A 12-year girl child from one of the tea gardens of the region is also among those infected. One of them has recovered and the remaining people are still under medical attention.

High fever, headache, and talking gibberish are some of the symptoms of the illness and immediate medical attention can save the life of the patient. Japanese Encephalitis is a vector-borne disease that is spread by mosquitos.

The person who died of Japanese Encephalitis was Anup Saikia, a school teacher and a resident of Kachari Gaon of Sootea. He died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Sunday at around 1.30 PM. He was 57 years old at the time of death. According to the information received, Anup Saikia was admitted to a private hospital in Guwahati on July 15 and Japanese Encephalitis was detected in his body. He underwent medical treatment for a long time. The family members later shifted him to GMCH. But Saikia breathed his last this afternoon. His untimely demise was widely mourned here. He leaves behind his wife, son and daughter along with a host of relatives.

Before that, under the Demow Block Primary Health Centre in Athabari near Demow, Jatin Das (63) who was suffering from Japanese Encephalitis died on Monday evening. According to sources, Jatin Das was suffering from Japanese Encephalitis for the last few days and was having treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh and was also having treatment at a private nursing home in Dibrugarh on Monday evening Jatin Das passed away at his residence.
