SILCHAR: In a surprising move, both Silchar and Karimganj units of the Congress had, for the first time in its history, decided to celebrate Durga Puja. Silchar Congress is, however, a step ahead as they are organising Durga Puja with all its rituals and grandeur. Karimganj Congress this year confined itself within cultural programmes as they on Wednesday organized ‘Agamani’ to welcome the goddess.
Abhijit Paul, the president of the Cachar unit of the Congress said, Durga puja was a festival of the Bengalis and no eyebrow should be raised if our party, which believed in secularism, celebrates the puja. “No politics please’, with folded hands, Paul clarified. He asked everyone not to trace any link with the ensuing Lok Sabha election.
The premise of Silchar Congress, was now vibrant as the finishing touch for pandal and lighting was in full swing. Celebration of religious event in Indira Bhawan, the office building of the DCC, however was not new, as every year, Iftar party was organized.
In Karimganj, the DCC president Rajat Chakrabarty said, they would organize Durga Puja next year. This time only the Agamani, the cultural programme on Durga Puja had been organized. Chakrabarty said, nobody or no party had the absolute right over Sanatan dharma. The Congress too had the right to organize puja in its premises.
The senior BJP leader Mission Ranjan Das, on the other hand, in a sarcastic tune, said, the Congress was actually trying to atone the sin they had committed by opposing the Ram Mandir and Ram Setu. Subrata Bhattacharjee, the district BJP president said, it was the charisma of Narendra Modi that even the pseudo secular and champion of appeasement had finally decided to celebrate Devi Durga. Rajat Chakrabarty on the other hand said the saffron party had always used Hindutva as a tool for their divisive politics whereas for the Congress religion was a matter of personal preference.
