SILCHAR: Stalemate continued in NIT Silchar since Monday as the agitating students demanding the immediate suspension of Dean (Academic) Binay Krishna Roy, rejected the authority’s proposal to depute Prof Lalit Chandra Saikia as the in-charge Dean. At least four students following their hunger strike, were admitted in Silchar Medical College and Hospital as they fell sick. On Friday last, Koz Bokar, a fifth semester student hailing from Arunachal Pradesh committed suicide. The incident triggered much tension in the campus as a group of students vandalised the house of Roy alleging that his misbehaviour led their fellow student to take such fatal step. Roy along with his wife and son were rescued at midnight by the police after a bout of scuffles between the students and the security personnel.

On Monday, the students began their Satyagraha demanding justice for Bokar and immediate suspension of Roy. They alleged that Bokar did not commit suicide, rather he was ‘murdered by the authority’. After a series of discussions, the NIT registrar K L Baishnab and senior teacher Prof Fazal Ahmed Talukder met the agitating students and conveyed that Saikia would continue as the acting Dean till an amicable solution was reached at. However the students outrightly rejected the proposal as they smelt conspiracy to bring back Roy after a few days. NIT director Prof Dilip Kumar Baidya was out of station and he was supposed to return on Friday. After his arrival, a solution might be reached at. Meanwhile at least four students fell sick and they were sent to SMCH.
