DOOMDOOMA: The members of the Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti have demanded that the government utilise the government land occupied illegally by private parties and use the same for the rehabilitation of the people who have been adversely affected by the floods.
Student association Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti on Wednesday demanded that the local administration take immediate action to remove people encroaching into government land and allocate the same to the people who have faced the blunt force of the floods in recent times. They have also issued a deadline of 10 days for the administration to take the necessary steps in this direction.
The representatives of the organisation mentioned that government land in the Tenga Goan of Talap which comes under the Doomdooma Revenue Circle has been encroached upon by private parties. Adding that Lakhmi Barma and Babulal Barma, both residents of the Balibazar locality of Talap have encroached into the land and set up a tea plantation in the same land. They also mentioned that while some flood-affected people still remain in the relief camps, the administration is not taking due action against those encroaching on government land.
Demanding immediate intervention into the matter, the Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti has mentioned that if the same is not done, they will be forced to take up protests including protest marches in the locality and the administration will be responsible for the same.
Previously the Executive Member of Forest, Bodoland Territorial Council, Ranjit Basumatary on Saturday made it clear that there would not be any compromise on eviction on encroached forest land and warned the elements who are trying to politicize the eviction drive by instigating encroachers to grab forest land.
After carrying out eviction against illegal encroachers in Laokriguri forest land under Aie Valley division in the Chirang district, Basumatary said that 22 families of Laokriguri forest land were backed by the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and they were destroying saplings planted by the Social Forestry to plant rubber trees. He said the 22 families had been served notice and asked not to destroy the saplings but they continued destroying forest lands. He alleged that there were plans for the plantation of 5 lakh rubber trees in which the former deputy chief of BTC and leaders of Bodo National Students’ Union (BoNSU) were involved.
