BARPETA: The protests against the state government’s decision regarding the demarcation of the districts are not over yet and the members of the All Barpeta District Students Union have called for a 12-hour-long bandh in the district over the bifurcation of the district.

Several regional organisations led by the All Barpeta District Students Union have called for a 12-hour Barpeta district bandh on September 2. They have called this bandh as a sign of protest against the decision of the state government to divide the greater Barpeta district into Barpeta and Bajali Districts. This call for a bandh has been supported by several organisations including the All Assam Students Union (AASU).

The organisation made this announcement calling for the bandh while addressing a press meet at the Swaheed Bhawan located in Barpeta on Friday. They demanded that the state government roll back its decision regarding the bifurcation of the district. They also informed the members of the press that the Barpeta Bandh called on Saturday is scheduled to start at 5 AM and end at 5 PM.

They also informed that the state government has recently decided to merge several key points of the Barpeta district into the comparatively new Bajali district. These include important regions like Sarbhog, Barpeta Road and Howly towns. They also mentioned that a large number of local residents are against this decision and want to remain part of the Barpeta District and not the Bajali District and referred to the multiple instances when the public protested against this decision.

They also expressed hope that this bandh as a sign of protest, will be able to catch the attention of the state government and pay heed to their demands against the proposed changes in the administrative units. They also called on the public of the district to support their cause and try to ensure that the state government listens to their demands.
