GOLAGHAT: The Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) on Thursday submitted two separate memoranda on two different issues.
One memorandum was sent to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat. This memorandum was sent by the ATTSA Golaghat District Committee and Golaghat and Dergaon branches of the student organization demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the tea tribe community of the State. ATTSA Golaghat District Committee president Babul Turi and secretary Sushil Kalindi in the memorandum stated that the tea tribe community of the State had immense contribution in the socio-economic development of the State but at the same time they were getting deprived in several ways. It is a long-pending demand of the ATTSA to give the tea tribe community ST status. But the past governments had never shown interest to fulfill this demand. So seeking a positive response from the present State Government, the tea tribe student organization submitted the memorandum to the Chief Minister.
On the other hand, another memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat by ATTSA Golaghat branch regarding admission procedure of tea tribe students in higher education institutions in Golaghat. Acting president Sumit Deep and secretary Anuj Kurmi in the memorandum stated that amidst this pandemic situation when schools and colleges were closed and online classes as well as online admission process was going on, it was seen that the tea tribe community students were having problems as most of them cannot afford and understand the online format. So the ATTSA Golaghat district branch demanded that the district administration should order the higher education institutions to make some easy arrangements for admission of tea tribe community students.
