Assam: Tea workers stage protest at Naharkatia Tea Estate

An hour-long demonstration was conducted in front of the main entrance of the Factory House of Naharkatia Tea Estate (APPL, A Tata enterprise) on Friday at the request of the Naharkatia wing of the Assam Tea Mazdoor Sangh and under the auspices of the Naharkatia Tea Garden Group.

NAHARKATIA: An hour-long demonstration was conducted in front of the main entrance of the Factory House of Naharkatia Tea Estate (APPL, A Tata enterprise) on Friday at the request of the Naharkatia wing of the Assam Tea Mazdoor Sangh and under the auspices of the Naharkatia Tea Garden Group. In the protest, tea workers demanded an increase in the daily wages of labourers to Rs 351 and vice-versa.

At the end of the protest, the president and secretary of the Naharkatia tea garden unit of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam, the Labour Minister, the Labour Commissioner of Dibrugarh district and the manager of the tea estate through the Naharkatia Tea Garden Authority. The demands made through the memorandum are to increase the wages of tea workers to Rs 351, the wages of the workers employed in the gardens of small tea growers were fixed at Rs 232 but did not implement till date. So they are demanding for immediate implementation and submitted a memorandum with a total of 16 demands, such as early implementation of the wage of Rs. 232, providing doctors in tea gardens where there are no doctors etc.
