Assam: Third Edition of the Annual Hagrabir Cup Underway

The tournament is being organised in the public playground of the Mukuk village in the Saikhowa Development Block of Tinsukia District.

TINSUKIA: The Hagrabir Cup is an annual football tournament of the Sonowal Kachari community and the third edition of the tournament was flagged off in the Tinsukia district of the state.

The Nabajagrit Jubak Sangha of the Hahkhati Muluk Village in the Saikhowa Development Block of the Tinsukia District and the Saikhowa Anchalik Sonowal Kochari Students have organised this year’s Hagrabir Cup. The tournament is being organised in the public playground of the Mukuk village.

The tournament was flagged off by the Sports Secretary of the Tinsukia District, Jeeban Baruah. In the inaugural speech, he spoke about the growing abuse of narcotics substances among the youth, which has been gradually pushing them towards danger. He also mentioned that sports are the only way by which the youth can protect themselves from this evil. He appealed to the parents to introduce their sons and daughters to sports along with studies, to ensure their bright future.

The president of the central committee of the Sonowal Kachari Students Union Debanada Cheleng, Dipti Sonowal and Basanta Sonowal from the Sonawal Kachari Autonomous Council were among those who attended the inauguration of the tournament. A large number of people visited to the venue despite the warm weather to witness the first match, in which Sadiya defeated Digboi with a 1:0 score.

Meanwhile, as a part of the state government’s initiative to promote sports across the state, the Khel Maharan is expected to flag off across the state on Wednesday. The registration for the same has also been closed recently. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had unveiled the logo, mascot, jersey and theme songs of the forthcoming Khel Maharan earlier this month. The event was held at the CM Conference Hall which was also attended by the Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa. The first edition of Khel Maharan will kick off on November 1 and will continue till January 10 next year. The competition will be held in five disciplines which are: Athletics, Football, Kabaddi, Volleyball and Kho Kho.
