Assam: Three Drug Peddler Nabbed, Including One Temple Priest

All three individuals were apprehended from the Crossing Gate bazaar in Lumding town.

GUWAHATI : An episode took place on 30th of January, Monday night, where a temple priest has been arrested in connection with illegal contrabands. Assam police nabbed two more individuals regarding the matter from Assam's Hojai district.

The incident took place at around 10pm in Lumding town. All three individuals were apprehended from the Crossing Gate bazaar of the region. Based on a prior information, the concerned police department charged a man who served as a priest in a Hanuman temple located in Lumding, along with two other man for smuggling drugs in the area.

According to sources, the former priest has been identified as Subho Upadhyay, who is currently 30 years old.

The other two accused has been identified as Abul Kalam, who is 37 year old and Dilawar Hussain, 47 year old. Both of them are residents of Doboka town situated in Hojai district.

Chandan Jyoti Bora, the OC of Lumding police department stated that, the arrest was made late at night when the unit got information about drug peddling in the area.

The officer in charge further informed that, a plastic container has been recovered from their possession, in which the paddlers usually carry the illicit items. According to sources, all the three accused who is currently under the custody will be presented before the court for further legal process.

Despite several efforts by the state administration, and tons of cases registered against drugs seizure, fee culprits are still carrying out the illegal activities in and around the state.

An episode took place on 25th of January, Wednesday, in Guwahati Railway Station. In a massive haul by the Government Railway Police (GRP), huge package of illicit ganja has been recovered from a train. As per sources, the personnels found approximately 40kg of cannabis from a train.

The illicit drugs were seized from Vivek Express which arrived in Guwahati city from Assam's Dimapur district on Wednesday morning. The police could not arrest the culprits as the cannabis were recovered unattended. The ganja is suspected to be worth Rs 20 lakhs, and was packed in two separate bags inside the train.
