Udalguri: In an unfortunate incident, at least three members of a family, including a toddler were trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in the wee hours on Wednesday.

As per reports, the incident was reported in Majbat area which falls under the Udalguri district, along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

The deceased have been identified as Naveen Boro (57), Yamini Boro (37), and Hadansha Boro.

The incident took place when the herd of elephants who came out of the forest in search of food attacked the family while they were sleeping at midnight hours.

Meanwhile, the regional Majbat committee of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) expressed grief over the incident and asked the government to take responsibility for the child named Nijara Boro who survived the attack.

Earlier on Monday, another three people including a child lost their lives in an elephant attack in Assam's Goalpara district.

As per reports, the incident took place at Kurang village near Lakhipur along the Assam-Meghalaya border in the early hours.

"Three people including a child were killed in an elephant attack. The incident was taken place along Assam-Meghalaya bordering area," ANI quoted Dhruba Dutta, Forest Range Officer of Lakhipur as saying.

As per locals, the wild elephants often come to the area and damage properties.

In one of the harshest forms of man-elephant conflict, 229 humans lost their lives in Assam in the past three years – 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22.

Assam lost 75 human lives in 2019-20, as many as 91 in 2020-21, and 63 in 2021-22.

The shrinking elephant habitats lead the pachyderms to make a foray into human habitats, leading to such conflicts and rampant deforestation in the state also aggravates the situation.

According to Forest sources, 33 elephant casualties due to electrocution took place in the state in three years – nine in 2018-19, 11 in 2019-20, and 13 in 2020-21.

The sources further added that 15 elephants died in three years – four in 2019, six in 2020, and five in 2021 – after being hit by trains in NF Railway's jurisdiction.
