Assam: Two brothers washed away in Brahmaputra

In a tragic incident, two brothers were washed away in the Brahmaputra river while offering pind daan (offering homage to departed soul) at Mohanaghat area in Dibrugarh on Wednesday morning.

DIBRUGARH: In a tragic incident, two brothers were washed away in the Brahmaputra river while offering pind daan (offering homage to departed soul) at Mohanaghat area in Dibrugarh on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at around 8.45 a.m on Wednesday morning while the two brothers were at Mohanaghat area for offering pind daan to their departed mother who died six months ago. The two brothers have been identified as Diganta Kakoti and Ananta Kakoti, residents of Amolapatty area of Dibrugarh.

According to reports, Diganta fell on the river while going to offer the pind, his younger brother jumped in the river to rescue his elder brother and from then they went missing. The incident was reported at 8.45 am at Mohanaghat area in Dibrugarh.

Diganta Kakoti leaves behind his wife and two daughters. Ananta was unmarried.

“NDRF and SDRF launched a search operation. The search team stopped at 5 p.m and on Thursday, they will again launch the search operation at around 6 am. The river has been flowing with heavy current due to the change in river course,” said an official of ASDMA.

A police official said, “A girl came with them and she reported the whole incident. She is the eyewitness of the incident.
