Assam: Two Injured by Wild Rhino from Kaziranga

The injured people were on their way to Jorhat from Tezpur when the incident happened.

KAZIRANGA: In an unfortunate incident, two people were injured after being attacked by a wild rhino in Assam. The incident took place near the popular Kaziranga National Park of Assam on Thursday.

According to local people, two people aboard a two-wheeler sustained injuries after they were attacked by a wild rhino. The incident took place near the Haldhibari wildlife corridor located near the Kohora range of the Kaziranga National Park.

The two people injured in the incident are said to be father and son in relation. They were travelling from Tezpur to Jorhat on the two wheeler when they were attacked by the wild rhino. The son, identified as Gyanam Mahanta sustained serious injuries in this incident.

Both the injured people were shifted to a medical facility in Jorhat following the incident. They were first administered first aid in a health centre in Kohora before being shifted to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

Rhinos often venture out of the protected areas in search of food and people getting attacked by these massive herbivores is not a rare occurrence.

In a previous incident, a one-horned rhino wandered out of the Eastern Range Gamiri within the Biswanath wildlife division, Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Thursday, injuring up to four persons. Rudrabahadur Dorji (male, 62), Radhika Dorji (female, 45), Jailash Sahani (female, 36), and forest worker Ajijul Hoque have been named as the injured (Male-24). The incident was reported from the Biswanath district community of Gohpur's Dipora Tinimukhi.

One SRPF member from the Gopaljaroni Anti-Poaching Camp was also hurt during the incident. The rhino that escaped the Kaziranga National Park attacked four persons, including our forest staff, according to Pranjal Gogoi, a forest ranger in Gohpur. Our forest rangers used airborne blank fire to scare the animal away. All of the injured people were initially sent to Biswanath civic hospital for treatment; however, for better care, they were eventually transferred to Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital.
