GUWAHATI : After the dreadful ragging episode at Dibrugarh University, where a student was severely injured, the entire state as well as the nation is in a state of shock. In order to maintain a peaceful and just environment inside the education campus, Supreme Court of India has entirely put a ban on ragging.
Following this, Assam University has recently issued a notice, imposing a complete ban on ragging of any sort inside the campus. Ragging is currently one of the most frightening issues of higher education institutions in India. After the tragic ragging incident of Dibrugarh University, recently another case was reported at Silchar Dental College. 14 students were expelled from the college by the authorities, after a complaint was registered by a few students from the 1st year.
They alleged that the seniors were continuously torturing them mentally and physically. The principal of the college, Manjula Das informed the anti ragging committee about the issue, after which the committee with the help of district administration officials, rusticated the accused students from staying in the hostel.
Cases of ragging have always been a concerning issue in the country, and it is not at all a new phenomena. Universities and institutions has been adopting anti-ragging policies to eliminate the issue. Assam University Silchar in its circular imposed a complete ban on ragging, and any sort of ragging would be considered as a punishable offence. The notice was issued on 7th of December, 2022.
Dr. Himadri Sekhar Das, monitor of Assam University, directed all the students to fill up the anti-ragging form in its website www.antiragging.in, in Assam University Silchar. Students were also advised to include the contact number of Proctor while filling up the form online. Apart from this the authority asked the students to thoroughly go through the website that mentions Supreme Court and UGC regulations.
However, the recent cases of ragging also emphasises the fact that anti-ragging mechanisms in universities and institutions have not been properly initiated.
