KHERONI: In a surprising incident, the national flag was hoisted upside down during the independence day celebration at a government office in Kheroni.

The incident took place during the Independence Day celebration hosted at the premises of the Lok Nirman Department office in Kheroni in the West Karbi Anglong district of the state on Tuesday morning. Kheroni has a sub-divisional office of the concerned department and the event was undertaken on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day.

Local people have raised questions as to who was responsible for the incident while trying to pay respects to the national symbol.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled ambitious plans for comprehensive administrative reforms during his address at the 77th Independence Day Celebrations held at the Khanapara Veterinary Field in Guwahati. Amidst a gathering that included Cabinet Ministers, Kamrup (Metro) DC Pallav Gopal Jha, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah, and other dignitaries, the chief minister outlined a series of transformative changes slated to reshape the state's administrative landscape within a remarkably short span of one month.

The foremost and perhaps the most striking among these reforms is the abolition of the sub-division system across the state. Chief Minister Sarma emphatically stated that the existing sub-division structure would be replaced by the establishment of sub-districts within each constituency. This structural shift seeks to decentralize administrative functions, potentially enhancing governance efficiency and citizen access to services.

In addition to this radical change, the chief minister also announced that districts that have been merged with other existing districts would undergo a thorough review, with a decision about their future determined within the following two months. This indicates a keen commitment to streamlining administrative boundaries and structures for improved governance outcomes. The event was not only significant for the announcement of these transformative measures but also for the occasion itself. Chief Minister Sarma hoisted the national flag at Khanapara, marking the nation's 77th year of independence. He extended his greetings on X saying, “On this Independence Day, let's stand together in pride, unity, and gratitude for the freedom we cherish. May our nation's journey ahead be filled with progress, peace, and prosperity for all.”
