Assam: Villagers Lodge Complaint Regarding Misappropriation of MGNREGA Funds

Department of Panchayat and Rural Development department of the state had allocated an amount of Rs 21,31,692 under the MGNREGA Scheme

MANKACHAR: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 or MGNREGA aims to create rural infrastructure and generate employment to the same end. However, some villagers have approached the District Commissioner of the concerned district reporting the misappropriation of the funds coming for the same.

The incident took place in the South Salmara - Mankachar district of the state. Villagers of the Buwaliya village under the Kukur Mara Gaon Panchayat of the Fekamari block of the South Salmara Mankachr district alleged that large amounts of corruption had taken place in their village in terms of the work that needs to be done under the MGNREGA Scheme.

It can be noted that the Department of Panchayat and Rural Development department of the state had allocated an amount of Rs 21,31,692 under the MGNREGA Scheme for the Buwaliya village of the state for the construction of a road. Another contract was allocated for the construction of a PWD road from the Kukur Mara Road to the Buwaliya village with an allocation of Rs 14,99,627 for the same in the 2021-22 financial year.

The local villagers have alleged that the president of the Gaon Panchayat had misappropriated large amounts of funds that had come for the same. They approached the District Commissioner of the South Salmara- Mankachar district of the state with a written complaint about the same.

It remains to see if the office of the District Commissioner of the South Salmara- Mankachar will take up an investigation into the same and the perpetrators will be punished as per law.

Previously, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption made a significant breakthrough while carrying on the fight against corruption in the Lakhimpur district. Sleuths caught a Sub-Inspector (UB) at Panigaon Police Station immediately after he had accepted a bribe. The Sub-Inspector has been identified as Merafat Ali. As per the information received, Merafat Ali took Rs 5,000 from the complaint at the Police Station to grant him bail in a criminal case.
