GUWAHATI: In a shocking turn of events, a violent altercation erupted inside the North Lakhimpur district jail, resulting in injuries to four inmates. The incident occurred late on a Monday night when the prison's security personnel were alerted by the distressing screams of some inmates shortly after dinner.

The assailant, identified as Abdul Kalam, a convict serving a life sentence for a murder case, attacked four fellow inmates within their cell. The victims, namely Abdul Mutalib, Ruhul Amin, Azizur Rahman, and Zainal Abedin, suffered serious injuries during this chaotic and disturbing episode. Swift action was taken as all four injured individuals were promptly rushed to the North Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital to receive urgent medical treatment.

The condition of Abdul Mutalib was particularly critical, necessitating his transfer to the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh for specialized medical attention.

The motives behind this brutal assault seem to be rooted in personal disputes. Abdul Kalam, the aggressor, had been sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder case just three months prior to the incident. Reports suggest that he was embroiled in conflicts over land issues with his own sons. Tragically, the individuals he targeted in the attack were allegedly aligned with his estranged sons, escalating the existing tensions within the prison environment.

Remarkably, three of the four inmates who fell victim to this violent clash were incarcerated for their involvement in an entirely different criminal episode. They had been imprisoned for their roles in assaulting a police team during operations against counterfeit currencies and fake gold in the No. 2 Ahmedpur area of Tinithengiya, Bangalmora, not too long ago.

This disturbing incident highlights the challenges faced by the authorities in maintaining order and security within correctional facilities. The clash serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced safety measures and conflict resolution strategies within the prison system. The injured inmates now face a challenging path to recovery, while the underlying issues that led to this violent outbreak must be addressed to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
