BISWANATH: The locals of the Sowaguri village in the Biswanath region of the state are facing problems of human-elephant conflict as a herd of wild elephants were found roaming in the village.

According to the officials, a herd of wild elephants came out from the Kaziranga National Park on the morning of Friday. The elephants caused massive damage to the crops of the Sowaguri village and triggered panic among the villagers. The forest officials also mentioned that the herd must have come out of the protected area seeking shelter and higher grounds because of the flooding in the park.

Meanwhile, the officials of the park tried to chase the elephants back into the forest area by multiple means including firing in the air. But they were not successful as the herd refused to move into the water because a young elephant was also part of this group. Even boats have been put to use to chase out the elephants from the location, but no positive response has been visible yet.

Recently, a tumultuous situation unfolded in Kampur, located in Assam's Nagaon district, as a herd of elephants wreaked havoc, leading the authorities to take immediate action. In response to the crisis, three schools in the area were closed until the situation could be brought under control. Additionally, business establishments were shut down to prevent any further untoward incidents. The local municipality took to the microphone to issue urgent alerts to villagers, urging them to remain vigilant. The need for such precautions arose after the herd of wild elephants strayed out of their natural habitat and attacked two individuals, causing severe injuries. The wounded victims were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where their critical condition necessitated their subsequent transfer to Nagaon Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
