Assam: Woman activist Rani Devi of Santipur passes away

Octogenarian women activist, vice-president of All Assam Mahila Samiti, chief adviser of Darrang District Mahila Samiti, and an ardent activist of the Assam Movement, Rani Devi of Santipur in Mangaldai town made her final journey to eternity on Wednesday evening at her residence following old-age ailments. She was 84.

MANGALDAI: Octogenarian women activist, vice-president of All Assam Mahila Samiti, chief adviser of Darrang District Mahila Samiti, and an ardent activist of the Assam Movement, Rani Devi of Santipur in Mangaldai town made her final journey to eternity on Wednesday evening at her residence following old-age ailments. She was 84.

Born at Chiring Sapori in Dibrugarh, Rani Devi married Nandini Sarma alias Babul Sarma - a prominent businessman of Mangaldai. Known for her commitment towards society and courage to face challenges for the causes of society, particularly for the downtrodden women, she took an active part in the Assam Agitation and subsequently in women empowerment for many years. Popularly known as ‘Rani Baideu’ in the entire district of Darrang, she had led the Darrang district Mahila Samiti as its president for several years at a stretch. She was also associated with several local socio-religious institutions, including Mangaldai Sanatan Dharma Sabha and others.

She leaves behind a son and three daughters along with a host of relatives and well-wishers. Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia, vice chairman of Assam State Women Commission, Nilima Devi, Mangaldai civic body chairperson Nirmali Devi Sarma, senior journalists Mayukh Goswami, Hemanta Barua and Ganesh Dutta, and many other distinguished personalities and social organizations have expressed their deep sorrow at her demise and offered condolences to the bereaved family members.

The last rites were performed on Thursday morning at the public crematorium at Tengabari here in the presence of a large number of relatives, well-wishers and office bearers of various social organizations.
