UTTARKASHI: Two workers from the state who were stuck in a collapsed tunnel in Uttarkashi of the Uttarakhand state were finally rescued successfully, bringing a sign of relief to the families and local residents of the region from where they belong.
The workers named Ramprasad Narzary and Sanjay Basumatary were among the large number of people who were working in the tunnel when the incident took place. A total of 41 people were trapped for a total of 17 days after the tunnel collapsed, preventing any possibility of escape. Both belong to Rampolbil under Serfanguri Police Station in the Kokrajhar District of Assam.
It can be noted that the families of both workers do not have access to a television, so they have to watch all the updates on their mobile phones. When the families finally saw the workers being rescued and taken for proper medical checkups over their mobile devices, they breathed a sigh of relief.
The families also thanked the authorities for ensuring the rescue of the duo along with the rest of the workers from the collapsed tunnel.
All the 41 people trapped in the tunnel in Uttarakhand's Silkyara were rescued late Tuesday. This brought an end to the frantic 17-day multi-agency operation that relied completely on the banned manual "rat-hole"-mining technique. It was employed after the high-tech equipment failed to drill through the nearly 60 metres of rock that has threatened to bury the workers alive. The extraction process took some time to allow each worker to re-acclimatise to surface conditions, where the temperature is around 14 degrees at the time of rescue. The workers were brought out on special stretchers which were lowered manually down a two-metre-wide pipe inserted into holes drilled into the hillside. They were shifted to a facility for immediate medical attention.
