Assam: Workers Protest at NRL for Non-Payment of Dues

The protesters mentioned that over 800 labours were working in the refinery in activities related to the annual shutdown.

GOLAGHAT: Several contractual workers who were previously engaged in the Numaligarh Refinery, staged a protest against the non-clearance of their dues with regard to the work done at the gates of the refinery complex.

The employees of the contracting firm M/S Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed were engaged in the work involved in the annual shut don of the Numaligarh Refinery staged the protest saying that they have not received their due payments for their work.

The protesters mentioned that over 800 labours were working in the refinery since March and even after completing the work related to the shutdown, they were not paid their due wages. They added that after continued protests since May 15, they were paid a part of their dues. As the remaining amount was not paid, the workers decided to restart their protest. They demanded the NRL authorities take necessary and adequate actions towards the payment of all the remaining funds to the workers.

A few days back, a large fire erupted at the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in the Golaghat district. Immediately after the incident, NRL employees from the fire and safety department and fire tenders arrived at the scene and started putting out the fire. According to a report, Kajal Saikia, General Manager (HR) of NRL, said “The fire broke out at the Hydrocracker unit of NRL. Our fire and safety department personnel have immediately engaged in work to douse the flame. Now the fire is under control and there is no report of any casualty in the incident.”

He added that the Numaligarh Refinery would carry out a technical investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire and the entire loss. According to NRL spokesperson Madhuchanda Adhikari, the fire has been put out and no casualties or injuries have been reported. Around 7.20 p.m., a fire started in Vessel VV-4 of the refinery's hydrocarbon unit, and firefighters were on the scene right away to put it out.
