Assam: World Elephant Day Celebrated in Bijni

An awareness meeting was also undertaken on the occasion, which was attended by several dignitaries from the forest department as well as the BTR administration.

BIJNI: Along with the rest of the world, World Elephant Day was celebrated in the Bijni town of the Chirang district of the state. To mark the occasion, a total of 25 elephants of the forest department were bathed and a parade was taken out by the Panbari Forest office.

The event was organised in the picturesque Ranighat picnic spot at Parbari near the Manas National Park. A ‘Hosti Pujan’ was also organised to mark the occasion before the parage. The 25 elephants which took part in this parade included young ones as well.

Meanwhile, on the same day, an incident of conflict between wild elephants and humans took place in the West Karbi Anglong district of the state on Saturday morning. One such wild elephant which had come out of the West Karbi Anglong region of the state, was spotted with a rather irregular behaviour. The incident took place in the Hawaipur locality of the district. It was seen moving around in circles at a particular spot, which intrigued the local people.

Thereafter, when the local people tried to chase the elephant away, it charged at the people. It also entered the premises of the home of a local resident and damaged a Maruti Suzuki WagonR vehicle that was parked inside. A two-wheeler was also damaged by the wild elephant. The whole incident triggered fear among the people of the region. They also expressed anger regarding the inability of the state forest department to ensure the safety of the people of the locality.

In a similar incident, wild elephants coming out of the nearby forest areas have wreaked havoc and triggered fear among the people of the Bihali region of Biswanath. They often damage the crops of the region as well as cause damage to life and property including valuable trees planted by the local people.
