DHUBRI: On Tuesday night, Dhubri Police made what is thought to be their biggest haul to date when they confiscated heroin worth Rs. 70 lakh from a contraband market. A police source in Dhubri informed that on a tip-off, Balajan unit of Dhubri Police, led by Sub-Inspector Purushottam Singh, intercepted a vehicle in Balajan area under Dhubri district and found the heroin concealed in soap boxes.

Inside the vehicle, there were two men and a woman along with a significant amount of drugs in their possession. All the three occupants, identified as Biswajit Ali, Harshjit Sheikh and Asma Khatun from Bidyapur village of Bongaigaon district, were later arrested.

The seized items included a cache of 100 grams of heroin concealed in 8 soap boxes along with a vehicle bearing no AS-26F-6664.

A senior police officer who did not want to be quoted stated that although Dhubri police had been doing everything in their power to combat drug traffickers for the past few years, the illicit drug trade is so entrenched that police alone cannot completely eradicate it.

He said, “Although there will always be police action against drug trafficking, I believe that in order to preserve the current and future generations from the drug problem, society as a whole must act quickly.”

In an interview with The Sentinel, Dhubri Superintendent of Police Nabin Singh stated that while the police have been doing all out to combat drug traffickers, they still need the public's help to eradicate the practice completely from society.
