LAKHIMPUR: Sharankumar Limbale, Marathi language author, poet and a noted literary critic of the nation, said that the Assamese language should get the classical language status.
The winner of the Saraswati Samman of the nation as appreciation for his unique literary works and creations, said this while taking part in the first open meeting of the 76th Narayanpur session of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) held on Friday. Notably, Sharankumar Limbale who has penned more than 40 books till date, attended the event as chief guest and supported the literary body's move initiated in order to achieve the tag. While delivering his lecture, Limbale lauded the role of Axam Xahitya Xabha in upgrading Assamese literature and culture since its inception till date. He turned overwhelmed on seeing the large crowd thronged in the extravaganza and the biggest confluence of literature, art and culture. "Such extravaganza, dedicated for literary amelioration, is organized in no other place in India. Axam Xahitya Xabha can be an example for others in this connection," Limbale said.
He further laid stress on the exchange of Assamese literary creations with other parts of India. "The people of other States of the nation cannot enjoy the taste of the Assamese literary creations because of language problem. So, Axam Xahitya Xabha should take effective steps to get the classic, noted literary creations of Assam translated into Hindi, English and other Indian languages," Limbale added.
