Assamese Women Faces Violence in Arunachal; Locals Encircle Silapathar Police Station

Slogans like “Assam Police Go Back”, “We want justice”, etc were also chanted by the crowd. They also forced the police officials to lodge an FIR.

Guwahati: A feud erupted between a group of Assamese women and locals of Arunachal at Sili Asomiya village near Silapathar following which hundreds of women flocked into Silapathar police station premises on the evening of May 5.

As per reports, the incident occurred when a group of women hailing from Sili Asomiya gaon (village) headed towards a hill in Arunachal Pradesh to collect firewood on May 4 and then locals at Ape Lise village allegedly assaulted them and forced them to kneel down.

The victims sought justice and informed about the matter to the village headman of the Ape Lise village. However, a case was filed by the village headman against the women at Arunachal's Likabali police station, that too without verifying the facts.

It led to the people of Sili Asomiya gaon getting furious and they then gathered at the Silapathar police station to lodge a counter case against the people of Ape Lise village demanding justice.

Much to their despair, an officer of Silapathar police reportedly sent back the case without even registering it.

Meanwhile, hundreds of men and women encircled the Silapathar police station on the evening of May 5, seeking justice. Slogans like "Assam Police Go Back", "We want justice", etc were also chanted by the crowd. They also forced the police officials to lodge an FIR.

Earlier, At least 25 people had been arrested by the Barpeta police on May 5 for attacking indigenous Muslim community people in Kaljahi Reserve.

According to some victims, more than 2000 people had attacked indigenous Muslims with sharp weapons like machetes, swords, axe and lathis on the afternoon of May 4.

Five persons had incurred serious injuries and were undergoing medical treatment at Barpeta medical college hospital and many others were left injured in the attack.

Locals had claimed that the attackers happened to be a bunch of encroachers who had settled in the area for the last few years and revealed that they were illegal migrants.
