GUWAHATI: Participants of Assam at the ongoing National Games in Gujarat went on to win at least four medals in various games.

Amlan Borgohain, a sprinter won the gold medal in the 100m race. Borgohain managed to cross the finishing line within 10.38 seconds.

Cyclist Chayankia Gogoi on the other hand won the silver medal in the 10km category.

Nayanmoni Saikia, bagged the bronze medal in lawn bowls, while Popi Hazarika won the silver medal in the 59kg category weightlifting.

Earlier the National Games event was labelled as Indian Olympic Games. The provisional Indian Olympic Association (IOA) started in the year 1924. In the same year, the Indian Olympic Games were organised as a way to select the competitors for the 1924 Paris Olympics.

During the 9th edition of the Indian Olympic Games, 1940, the name of the event was changed to National Games. It was held in Bombay, as it was called then.

The Indian Olympic Games were held every two years back then.

Although the National Games were supposed to be held every two years, this schedule has often failed. Guwahati took 5 years to host the games after the National Games in 2002, which were organised in Andhra Pradesh.

Notably, the National Games were postponed six times before resuming in the year 2011.

Presently, the 36th edition of the National Games is held in Gujarat from September 29 and will last till October 12. This is the first time that the state of Gujarat is hosting the National Games.

About 15,000 sportspersons, coaches, and officials from various states across the country have gathered in the venue to participate in 36 sports disciplines.

The National Games were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
