GUWAHATI: The minister of state for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Rameswar Teli revealed that, India's first ever bio-refinery unit for production of bioethanol from bamboo is expected to set up by October 2023 in Assam.
He mentioned this while addressing the Evolve-2023, a conference based on e-mobility and alterations fuels conducted by the Kerela Motors Vehicles Department. The work is speeding up in a quick manner at the Numaligarh refinery, he added.
This will be India's first set up for production of ethanol from bamboo. Bioethanol is procured from corn and rice. Currently, there is 12% ethanol blending which is targeted to be increased upto 20% by the year 2025, Teli mentioned.
The minister emphasised on the importance of using green hydrogen and other fuel options in order to decrease country's dependency on oil imports. India is currently dependent on imports for approximately 83% of its crude oil requirement, which needs to be lessened down, he added.
The Evolve-23 is a four day event, which began on the 19th of January, Thursday. Experts and professionals from across the globe participated in the event and discussed various source of e-mobility and alternative fuels.
CM Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the four day international conference and expo on Thursday. The Numaligarh refinery has extracted 25 bamboo chipping units for supplying to its upcoming biorefinery project.
The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), has a share of 70% of the refinery and Assam government is a stakeholder for the same. The project is a part of NRLs major integrated expansion project. The bioethanol project will have a capacity to produce 20MW of electricity using bamboo residue as the feed.
Ranjit Nath, the NRL and IOC chairman states that, the prime motive behind the establishment is to utilise the huge bamboo resources in the Northeast supplied by a network of bamboo chipping units.
