Guwahati: In some good news for Assam, the state's positivity rate has dipped below 2 per cent and the state did not witness any surge in the number of COVID-19 cases during Durga Puja, much to the relief of the government who was fearing a spike.

Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude to the people of Assam as they celebrated the auspicious Durga Puja maintaining the COVID-19 safety protocols.

Addressing a press conference in the state secretariate, Sarma said that the state has seen a downward trend in the number of active COVID cases in the last one month. At the end of September, there were 36,000 active COVID cases in the state. The active case after a month, today, stands at 10,421 cases.

After Tamil Nadu, Assam is in the second position in terms of recovery rate.

Sarma hoped that in the coming days the state's active number of cases will come down, and will soon see an increase in the recovery rate to 95%. However, the health minister expressed concern about the increasing number of deaths in the state. The reason behind the six to seven deaths per day is "late reporting," said Sarma.

He has urged the people of the state to immediately contact a hospital or undergo a test if they have the COVID-19 symptoms. "The Government provides the best care at the hospitals as well as homes," added Sarma.

The fatality count of the state is 926, which will soon touch the 1000 mark if people do not report immediately, he said.
