GOLAGHAT: The All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU) Golaghat district committee on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat demanding relaxation of admission and monthly fees in private schools in Golaghat due to the adverse effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a press statement signed by president and joint secretary of the organization, Krishna Baruah and Goutam Lahon respectively, it was stated that along with rest of the country, Golaghat district had also been adversely affected during the lockdown and all sections of people were facing financial hardships.

The Assam Government had directed to all private schools to exempt 50 per cent fees for the month of April, 2020. But after that some of the private schools of Golaghat asked guardians of the students through SMS and Whatsapp to pay complete fees from May onwards.

The ATASU leaders said that an order no. ASCPCR (G) 35/2017/Part-I/2020/17 of 30/03/2020 was sent by the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to all Deputy Commissioners to take action against those school authorities which harass guardians for payment of admission and monthly fees. ATASU Golaghat appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to take fruitful initiative on payment of fees in private schools as most of the guardians of the students were facing financial problems.
