Awareness meeting on child marriage held in Lakhimpur district

An awareness meeting on the demerits of child marriage was held at Kerker Mising Gaon in Lakhimpur district under the aegis of Police Department.

LAKHIMPUR: An awareness meeting on the demerits of child marriage was held at Kerker Mising Gaon in Lakhimpur district under the aegis of Police Department.

The event was organized in collaboration with Lakhimpur district with a call ‘Don’t encourage child marriage’. The meeting was held under the management of Bibardhan Patir, the secretary of the Dakhin Narayanpur Gaon Panchayat. Attending the event, ADC Manorama Morang delivered the keynote lecture by addressing the rural Mising people in the Mising language. The ADC mainly highlighted the issues created by child marriage and how it adversely impacts upon the family and the society.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan said, “Child marriage plays the role of catalyst in increase in the rate of maternity death. The possibility of the death of the new born baby, which a mother of minor age gives birth to, is also high.”

He further called upon the people not to encourage child marriage and to pay importance on holding marriage of their children at their adequate age, that is, girls at the age of 18 and boys at the age of 21. The Deputy Commissioner appealed to the public to come forward in order to wipe out the social issue and to help the district administration and Police Department in building a child marriage-free Lakhimpur.

On the other hand, SP Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa interpreted the sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. ASP Runa Neog also addressed the meeting, wherein District Development Commissioner Manoj Kumar Baruah, DIPRO Mandira Chayengiya, Narayanpur Development Block BDO Sewali Pegu were present along with many dignitaries.
