Tezpur: An initiative has been taken in the Phulbari tea gardens of Sonitpur district to spread awareness amongst the tea community about the ill effects of consumption of illicit liquor and wipe out the menace of alcoholism which claimed 159 lives at Halmira in Golaghat and at Borholla in Jorhat district, mostly tea garden workers.
Dr Pradip Kumar Lahkar, special member of medical advisory board plantation workers Govt. of Assam, chaired the meeting where Sanjay Batra, General Manager, Deputy Manager, Anku Baruah, around 100 workers including mothers club, senior doctor Girin Deka were also present.
During the meeting, Dr Lahkar said drinking alcohol not only affects the indivisible but also the family members and work environment. People should try to avoid alcohol as it harms the health of women and children. Sonitpur District Administration is also monitoring the activity of the persons, those who are involved in illicit liquor business. He further informed that, there is no casualty so far in Sonitpur district due to illicit liquor.
