LAKHIMPUR: Strong agitation programmes initiated by various organizations demanding the scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) on Monday rocked Lakhimpur at a time when Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved it in Lok Sabha.
The activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) staged a nude protest on the KB Road in North Lakhimpur town, strongly opposing the Bill. By initiating the programme, the organization demanded the Union Government scrap the Bill immediately. The Lakhimpur district AYM president took part in the protest in the comprehensive nude state while the other activists protested in the half-nude state. The organization rejected the Bill by terming it ‘Assam and Assamese community destructive’ and against the spirit of Indian democracy and the Constitution.
The members of Sachetan Chatra Samaj of North Lakhimpur staged bikshobh at the Main Charilai of the town on the same day demanding the scrapping of CAB. Similarly, the Lakhimpur district committee of the Youth Congress took out a torchlight rally on Monday evening reiterating the same demand. The activists of the Lakhimpur district units of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti also initiated torchlight rally opposing and demanding the scrapping of the controversial Bill. The protesters shook the environment shouting slogans against the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, governments at the Centre and the State and BJP regarding their moves taken to pass the communally motivated Bill to grant citizenship to a certain section of foreigners for alleged political benefit.
