MANGALDAI: "While the entire nation is celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav with a three-day colourful programme, yet the historic Peasants Uprising and the supreme sacrifice of the 140 Krishaks on historic Pothorughat in Darrang district on January 28, 1894 is yet to get recognition and honour by the Government of India. It is very unfortunate that the President or the Prime Minister is also yet to make a visit to pay homage to these Krishak Swahids at Pothorughat," said senior media person Mayukh Goswami, secretary of Mangaldai Media Circle, while addressing a public felicitation function organized at the Krishak Swahid Memorial complex at Pothorughat on Monday evening.

Pothoru Samannwaya Gosthi, a premier socio-cultural organization of Pothorughat, had organized the function to offer felicitation to the journalists of Darrang in recognition of their immense contribution in taking this historic yet neglected episode to the national level.

In the function anchored by teacher and social activist Akhil Ranjan Bhatta, former AASU activist Habibur Rahman also expressed his resentment over the negligence of the government towards this glorious chapter of the history of India's freedom struggle.

In the function, a total of 32 journalists of Darrang district were offered felicitation with a Bihuwan, a memento and a letter of citation. They were Bhargab Kumar Das, Mayukh Goswami, Hemanta Kumar Barua, Abdul Khalek, Dulal Deka, Lakkhi Nandan Kalita, Ranjit Nath, Rishi Pada Saharia, Lokeswar Nath, Manoj Ali, Kamal Nath and others. President's award recipient teacher Shashangka Hazarika also took part in the meeting. Earlier, secretary of the Gosthi, Mostak Hussain explained the objective of the function and accorded a hearty welcome to all the journalists and the audience. Fariha Ahmed, a budding talent, enthralled the audience with a patriotic song.
