Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav: Plantation drive concludes at Gargaon College

A massive tree plantation drive was conducted at Gargaon College to mark the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

SIVASAGAR: A massive tree plantation drive was conducted at Gargaon College to mark the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The programme was initiated under the Chief Minister's Institutional Plantation Programme from July 18 to August 15.

The iconic celebration was organized by Gargaon College in association with IQAC, Gargaon College, Assam Science Society Gargaon Branch, Gargaon College Science Forum, NCC and NSS Unit, Gargaon College; Eco Club Gargaon College & Environment and Climate Cell Gargaon College. As a part of this initiative, altogether 17 departments of the College of Arts, Science and Commerce Stream, PGDCA, non-teaching staff of Gargaon College and Gargaon College Students' Union Body enthusiastically participated in the programme with a pledge to properly nurture the saplings till they grow into full-fledged trees. The massive plantation drive started on July 18 by planting a Nahar (Ceylon Iron Wood) sapling by Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal, and a Bakul (Spanish Cherry) sapling by Dr Rina Handique, Vice Principal of the college.

During the plantation drive, more than 100 saplings of both medicinal and ornamental trees, including neem, mango, orange, pomegranate, jackfruit and other saplings were planted in different locations of the college.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College, emphasized the importance of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the activities carried out by the government under various themes. Dr Mahanta motivated the students to plant more trees in the future and highlighted the importance of trees in maintaining our ecosystem. He appreciated the remarkable work undertaken both by the teachers and students of the college. He further added that this ingenuity would go on a long way in inculcating responsiveness among the students about environmental conservation.
