Bapan Sarma conferred Prafulla Chandra Deka Memorial Journalism Award 2020

TANGLA: Senior journalist Bapan Sarma, Tangla correspondent of an Assamese newspaper and an inhabitant of Bhuyankhat village of Udalguri district, was conferred the Prafulla Chandra Deka Memorial Journalism Award 2020 by the Udalguri chapter of Assam Press Correspondents Union (APCU) in a ceremony held at Khoirabari in Udalguri district on Tuesday.

The award carrying a citation, xarai, a phulam gamosa and cash of Rs 10,000 was handed over by the president of Udalguri chapter of APCU, Girish Sarma. In his speech, journalist Bapan Sarma shared anecdotes from his journalism career spanning more than 25 years. He also spoke about the various welfare initiatives undertaken for journalists in Assam and added that journalism was a social and political action, a responsibility which required journalists to engage in active and responsible journalism.

Sarma also admitted that the present scenario of journalism in the world was a matter of concern and called upon journalists to work towards regaining their fading professionalism. He further urged journalists to take their jobs very seriously to save journalism itself. Nilima Deka, wife of the journalist in whose memory the award was constituted, was also felicitated on the occasion. A good number of journalists from various nooks and corners of Udalguri also attended the event.
