SILCHAR: Pradip Dutta Roy, chief convener of Barak Democratic Front (BDF), in a statement reiterated his earlier stand that a high level delegation of Union Home Ministry should visit Assam-Mizoram border and resolve the dispute amicably involving both the States. Mizo miscreants have again taken up aggressive postures in Khulicherra area under Dholai police station of Cachar on Thursday.
This kind of unprovoked and uncalled for muscle-flexing by Mizo mischief mongers with evil design has been possible due to the indifferent attitude of New Delhi and Dispur. It has to stop, Dutta Roy pointed out. After the heinous macabre incident of July 26 in which 6 brave Assam police jawans were killed, Mizo miscreants have carried out aggressions on Assam land repeatedly in Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi border fronts. The Mizo armed police and the administration, he said, plays second fiddle to it.
The ministerial level talks at Aizawl, better known as 15 minute dialogue, between the governments of Assam and Mizoram ended in fiasco with issue of a joint statement. Continuous Mizo miscreants' aggressive acts are its testimony. Worst affected are the people who live in the vulnerable zones, impacting on their livelihood. After dusk, they virtually live in panic, BDF chief convener said.
Dutta Roy rued and asked how long will it continue? He is firmly of the opinion since Assam and Mizoram governments cannot resolve the border imbroglio, the Union Home Ministry has to act in order to bury the hatchet for ever. Mizoram, as he said, is insisting on a solution on the basis of 1875 agreement while Assam presses for 1933 agreement signed during British regime. Moreover, Mizoram then was a part of Assam.
BDF leader said both the agreements have become archaic and irrelevant after Mizoram was carved out of Assam as an Independent state in 1987. Situation has changed. The boundary lines have to be properly redrawn and demarcated. Moreover, BDF has also demanded introduction of ILP by Assam government for restricting the flow of drugs and contraband goods from Mizoram. Unless these measures are taken, border areas will remain uneasy.
