Barak Valley chapter of Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) calls off protest rally

SILCHAR: Barak Valley chapter of Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called off their protest rally scheduled on April 4 as four police personnel, including Silchar Sadar OC, have been transferred.

VHP lodged complaints against seven police personnel who allegedly tortured five undertrials belonging to Bajrang Dal. In a recent reshuffle, apart from Sadar OC Jyoti Prasad Handique, three other policemen were transferred. On Saturday night, VHP and other organizations belonging to RSS, in a meeting decided to call off the proposed rally. A source said, in his recent visit to Silchar, the district's Guardian Minister, Ashok Singhal expressed resentment on local BJP leaders for their silence on the entire issue. Soon after his departure, the reshuffle happened. The source in the VHP hinted that the remaining three policemen would also be transferred soon.
